BITUMEN- (Paving & Industrial)
In Conform to IS: 73 & IS: 702
Bitumen is the end product of distillation petroleum crude. The
residue obtained from the refineries is called straight grade bitumen.
This bitumen has a softening point much below the day temperature and
penetration of 80 to 100 or 60 to 70, and is supplied by refineries.
The straight grade bitumen obtained from the refineries is processed
in our highly modernized plant through exothermic reaction, by
simultaneously heating and blowing to the relevant time limit required
for the exact grades depending upon its end- use. By this process
Bitumen becomes sludge/moisture free and softening/penetration values
are improvised to great extent. This is called Blown Bitumen and the
same has a wide range of industrial applications.
Blowing grades are divided into two categories namely Paving grades
confirming to IS: 73 and industrial grades confirming to IS: 702.
These grades are further distinguished depending upon their softening
points and penetration values.
BITUMINOUS EXPANSION JOINTING BOARDS:
Conf: to IS: 1838
(Bitumen Impregnated, Resilient Type, Performed Fillers for Expansion
Joints in concrete Structures)
Construction of concrete roads, runways, floor and roof slabs of
buildings, involves the casting of concrete in slab form. This leads
to construction joints. Bituminous expansion joint board is a low
density fiber board impregnated with bituminous solutions which are
light and rot-proof. Provision of these boards in the joints permits
free movement of the concrete slabs contract, this prevents damage to
the slabs besides waterproofing and resisting entry of foreign matter
into the joints.
Bituminous expansion joint boards are available in thickness of 12mm
(1/2”), 18mm (3/4”) and 25mm (1”) thickness.
NEED FOR PROVISION OF EXPANSION JOINTS:
• It preserves the life and evenness of the slab.
• It prevents seepage of surface water through the joints and also
prevents ingress of water or dirt down the joints.
• Permits free movement of the concrete slabs.
• Absorb ground shocks, caused by vibration and relaxes the stress of
the concrete slabs.
• Relieves stresses developed due to temperature shrinkage, creep,
relaxation, variation, etc.

The Bitumen Binder which are used in road construction are quite
Viscous, Semisolids at the normal temperature. They have to be heated
up to liquid state, to retain the fluidity. Some times it becomes
inconvenient to heat it, hence in most European countries it is
prohibited. Thus Bitumen Emulsion was used as the most competitive
medium for applying Bitumen to road surfaces or as base courses. Use
of emulsion, facilitates not only fluidity at the atmospheric
temperatures, but also the application to damp road surfaces and wet
Emulsified Bitumen acts as a key tool in road maintenance and
construction technology as it combines amazing versatility while
offering multiple comparative advantages.
Types of Emulsified Bitumen:
Bitumen Emulsion is of three types. Cationic, anionic and Non-ionic
types. The choice of particular type of emulsion depends upon the
climatic condition, aggregates and the soil condition.
This represents more than 95% of the world consumption today. These
cationic types as per industry standards, are used in three grades.
Applications: surface Treatment, tack coating, grouting, penetration
Applications: pot hole Repair, Patch Work, Surface Dressing, Plant
Road Mixes, Course aggregate for Premix Carpet.
Applications: Slurry seat, cold mixes, fog seal, crack filling.
